Jyotish

Astrology is called Jyotish , which means "science of light." Astrology is the science of understanding the subtle influences that come to us from the universe. These influences are a reflection of the law of karma. Here, both fate and free will are at play. Fate means that our present circumstances are a result of our actions from previous lives. The external events of our lives are ruled by past karma - over this we have little control. Free will means that our future is shaped by our actions in the present.

Astrology can help us to understand how to optimize our potential so our lives develop according to our true destiny. It gives us an idea of the trends and periods of life - when to act and when not .It helps us to understand our weaknesses, where we may need to put extra attention in order to attain fullness in our lives. It offers practical remedial measures that can help to alleviate areas of difficulty in the chart.

Astrology holds that spiritual practices help to minimize the effects of karma. The main remedial measures of Astrology are also spiritual and consist of rituals, mantras and meditation. Propitiation of the planets through rituals and other prescribed measures is an integral part of Astrology. Each planet has a deity, whose name can be chanted, and associated articles, which can be offered in worship or given in charity.

The Science of the Stars

Astrology is the study of the planets' position and direction relative to a certain celestial body [either the Sun (heliocentric astrology) or the Earth (geocentric astrology)] and its potential influence on a natural organism [a single being, or a population (such as a town, country, continent, etc.,]. Astrology uses a birth chart to map the positions of the planets relative to the location and moment of birth. The interpretation of the chart incorporates the angular relationships between the planets and the signs of the zodiac, the area of the chart in which they fall and other symbolic indicators to examine the different experiences and psychology of the individual. For centuries, astrologers have theorized that the positioning and movement of the heavenly bodies can have enormous consequences for a person. Today, they use that information to counsel individuals about emotional, professional or health-related problems. The “science of the celestial bodies,” Astrology may be considered to have been the first true science, and is a sort of transcendental metaphysics. A form of divination based on the ancient adage, “As above, so below.” An Astrologer uses planetary positions and alignments at the time of one’s birth to help foretell the future and to evaluate one’s potential strengths and weaknesses. Astrology in the hands of a genuinely knowledgeable and experienced person can provide very good, clear and precise guidance as well as providing forewarning for potential pitfalls. An ancient oracle and system based on the belief that planetary, zodiac/constellation cycles influence human and earthly affairs. Modern astrologers will find meaning and purpose in the stars. They recognize the astrological influences on historical events and they have refined their interpretation of individual behavior. The main remedies offered by Jyotish for bringing balance into life involve the wearing of gemstones, performance of pujas (sacred rituals designed to remove harmful forces or enhance positive forces), and performance of personal spiritual practices.

Rituals

A ritualistic puja is performed to keep us in harmony with the cosmic forces, thereby removing and overcoming the sorrows of life and bringing spiritual advancement.

By doing Puja/Havan, thoughts and vibrations of spiritual forces are created around us. These spiritual forces work to eliminate the negative influences in our life and help surround us with a positive energy which can bring us peace of mind, material prosperity and enable us to more clearly touch the divine, our true nature.

The periods when the results of our past actions, favorable or unfavorable, come to fruition are indicated by planetary positions at the time of our birth. A great deal about the events and influences of life can be predicted through the science of Jyotish (Vedic Astrology).

How Havans are Done?

Havans are revelations from the Higher Power to our Ancestors. In these sacred rituals Agni (Fire) is lighted in the Havan Kund (the sacrificial fire) and various energies (deities) are invoked by chanting the mantras and through various postures (mudras).

Many offerings are made to these deities during the Havan for our prayers to be answered. The people who completely believe in the ritual are immediately benefited, as grace comes to them spontaneously and instantaneously Why Do We Perform?

Havans are performed for several purposes; to dispel the negative energies in houses; to destroy negative life patterns; to annihilate negativity, curses of previous generations and also for counter black magic effects.

Havans also bring in high energies into houses, thereby paving way for positive thoughts, actions etc. They help in re-vitalizing the three energies in our body (Vata, Pitha, kapha) and help in maintaining energy balance.

During the havans, the divine energies from the deities flow into the body of the performer and thereby cleanse them of all negative energies and destroy negative samskaras.

They also bring in positive energies which in turn affect and change the outside world.
